A fishbowl for two

A melancholy start to a bittersweet day
Yesterday's carnage fresh from memory
The war was quick, little to no resistance
It's the same two casualties and the same old story

The universe must be so proud of this featurette act
Machiavellian, conspiring and connivingly tact
The jokes on you, they all roared in unison
Their glass hearts shattered, they lay there alone

This farcical spectacle for a fickle audience
Is not worth enduring to such degree
If the higher powers aren't watching, then what gives them the authority to decree?
The judgement has been passed, the verdict been made
It's not their decision, it never was, it's how it was always played

Wounds so deep, God knows if they'll ever heal
The anger inside caged, locked and tightly sealed
Go back to those depths, he said, this even I can't endure
For the good has no more rights, banished and happiness left to torture

The hardest part, he said, hits you at dawn
When the dream ends and the joy turns to scorn
There's so much to say and so little time
The innocence they shared was no fucking crime
